Global Definability in Basic Modal Logic

We present results on global definability in basic modal logic, and contrast our model-theoretic results and proof techniques with known results about local definability.

A Lindström characterisation of the guarded fragment and of modal logic with a global modality

We establish a Lindström type characterisation of the extension of basic modal logic by a global modality (ML[∀]) and of the guarded fragment of first-order logic (GF) as maximal among compact logics with the corresponding bisimulation invariance and the Tarski Union Property.

Impact of External Representation and Task on Graph Comprehension

This study examined the relationship between the external representation, verbal encoding vs. visual encoding, of graph information and the impact on graph comprehension. Graph comprehension tasks included responses to true/false statements addressing global and local graph information, visual recognition, and graph drawing. The findings suggest that the specific modality of the external repres...

A Complete Set of Satisfaction Rules for Property Detection in Distributed Computations

This paper presents a general framework for speciication and detection of properties in distributed computations. A property of states in distributed computation in progress is deened by predicates (called behavioral patterns) and satisfaction rules (called modal operators). A behavioral pattern is obtained by combining basic predicates that are deened over either local states or consistent glo...

Suhrawardi's Modal Syllogisms

Suhrawardi’s logic of the Hikmat al-Ishraq is basically modal. So to understand his modal logic one first has to know the non-modal part upon which his modal logic is built. In my previous paper ‘Suhrawardi on Syllogisms’(3) I discussed the former in detail. The present paper is an exposition of his treatment of modal syllogisms. On the basis of some reasonable existential presuppositi...
